The Alphabet Song (a history)

Who wrote the Alphabet Song

The English lyrics were first published by copywriter Charles Bradlee. The melody was based on a popular French children's song that inspired the composition of 12 variations written by Mozart.

When was the alphabet song written?

The first publication was in 1835 in Boston, Massachusetts. The melody has been used in many other songs, including Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Baa, Baa Black Sheep.


Is the alphabet song changing?

Teachers have been teaching a newer version in some schools, because of the confusion of L-M-N-O sounding like ellemeno. But there's been a backlash against the changes by older generations, so it's still to be seen if the changes will be fully embraced. 

The old version goes like this:

A,B,C,D,E,F,G,

H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P.

Q,R,S,T,U,V,

W,X,Y and Z.

Now I know my ABC's,

Next time won't you sing with me.


The new version goes like this:

A,B,C,D,E,F,G,

H,I,J,K,L,M,N.

O,P,Q,R,S,T,

U,V,W,X,Y,Z.

Now I never will forget,

How to say my alphabet.


In conclusion:

The English alphabet song has been around for a very long time, and has had contributions by many different people along the way. It's still changing and growing to this day, and continues to prove that it's a great way to learn your ABC's.
